STAFF WRITER 13:18 HRS IST

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 23 (PTI) The Election Commission today directed Kerala Government to shift Kannur District Collector following complaints of irregularities in the voters list for the November 7 by-election to the state assembly from Kannur seat.

The EC asked state Chief Secretary Neela Gangadharan to submit a list of three officials to be considered for replacing V K Balakrishnan, official sources said.

Alleged irregularities relating to enrollment of new voters had sparked a political controversy in the state with the LDF and the Congress-led UDF engaging in a slanging match ever since the bypoll for the politically-sensitive constituency was announced this month.

The Congress-led UDF complained to EC that the Collector had failed to act impartially on issues regarding "serious flaws" in the electoral list.

The by-poll has been become a prestigious political battle for both the LDF and the UDF.
