STAFF WRITER 13:1 HRS IST

Tokyo, Oct 30 (AFP) A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck offshore in southern Japan today, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage and Japanese agencies issued no tsunami alert.

The quake struck at 4:03 pm (1233 IST) at a depth of 50 kilometres below the sea floor in the Ryuku Islands region, said the US Geological Survey in a preliminary assessment.

The epicentre was 407 kilometres northeast of Japan's Okinawa island, said the USGS.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami information bulletin but said "no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists."

An earthquake official from Japan's Meteorological Agency said there was no risk of a tsunami.

Around 20 per cent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan.
