STAFF WRITER 12:24 HRS IST

Kathmandu, Nov 6 (PTI) Nine more cases of swine flu were detected in Nepal today, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 48.

Of the 12 samples brought from Parbat district, nine were found to be positive, said a senior official at the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division in Teku.

All schools in Kusma -- the district headquarters of Parbat -- have been closed since the last six days due to rapid spread of viral fever among the students.

The schools were shut after more than 1,000 students fell sick after a viral fever broke out in the area a week ago. More than 500 viral fever patients have visited local hospitals over the past one week, according to officials.

Meanwhile, with the spread of swine flu in neighbouring Baglung district also, the Public and Boarding School Organisation, Nepal (PABSON) has decided to temporarily shut down schools in the region.
