Guwahati, Nov 7 (PTI) An estimated 71 per cent polling was recorded in the byelection to two assembly constituencies in Assam today.

Election officials said there was a 77 per cent turnout in Dhekiajuli constituency in Sonitpur district and 65 per cent in south Salmara of Dhubri district.

Seven candidates are in the fray in Dhekiajuli and five in south Salmara.

The bypolls were necessitated after the election of south Salmara MLA and AUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal and Dhekiajuli MLA Joseph Toppo of AGP to the Lok Sabha in May.
