Varanasi, Nov 22 (PTI) Eminent Hindi and Bhojpuri writer Viveki Rai passed away at a hospital here in the wee-hours today due to prolonged illness.

He was 92.

Rai, a native of Sonwani village of Ghazipur district, was admitted at a private hospital a few weeks ago.

An author and a columnist for a Hindi daily, he had penned over 50 books during his lifetime.

He had participated in the country's Independence movement and even opposed the 21-month long Emergency imposed by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Rai's column published in a Hindi daily with the title "Manbodh Master Ki Diary" attracted a lot of praise for him and he was famous for his novel "Sonamati".

His other famous works include "Purush Puran", "Lokridn", "Shwet Patra", "Samar Shesh Hai" and "Mangal Bhawan".

Rai was receiptant of the Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan award, Uttar Pradesh's prestigious Yash Bharati award, Sharad Joshi award of the Bihar Raj Bhasha Vibhag, Setu award of the World Bhojpuri Sammelan and Mahaveer Prasad Dwivedi award of the Prantiya Hindi Sahitya Sammelan for his rich contribution to Hindi and Bhojpuri literature.

His last rites were performed at a cremation ghat here.
