Kolkata, Mar 8 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today described women as the "nation's pride" while wishing them on the occasion of International Women's Day.

Speaking in the West Bengal Assembly on the occasion, Banerjee said "Our mothers and sisters are our pride, I wish them well."

"All are equal. Sisters stay well if their brothers also do well, so I wish them the very best also," Banerjee said.

"Women are coming forward in every field and are doing well.

"We want women to secure more jobs and do well in education, sports and every other field," she said.

Stating that West Bengal has a proud culture of giving women their due respect and position, Banerjee said that the state has women district magistrates in seven out of its 20 districts, apart from several other women officers in important positions.

While the state has reserved 50 per cent seats for women in all municipal bodies, 33 per cent Lok Sabha MPs of ruling Trinamool Congress elected in 2014 are women, Banerjee, who is also the chief of the party, said.

She said the Kanyashree programme launched by her has benefitted lakhs of girl children in the state in taking forward their education and ensuring a better life for them.
