US-based DesiClik Eyes India for Growth

BENGALURU, September 18, 2017/PRNewswire/ --

DesiClik, the largest US-based vertical e-commerce marketplace specialising in Indian products, is now eyeing India to capitalise on its gift-driven sales. With over 10 per cent of its sales already coming from India, the portal plans to further build this market.

Using a multi-pronged approach, including competitive pricing, an exclusive South Asian product range and other incentives, DesiClik is looking at clientele in metros such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. A substantial section of this populace has friends and relatives living in the US.

There are more than 3 million Indians living in the US, with more than 60 per cent of them with their parents and kin back in India.

"We are seeing an increasing trend of reverse gifting from India to the US. Driven by sentiments such as love and gratitude, this is their way of showing appreciation for their loved ones in the US. Festivals such as Rakhi, Navrathri and Diwali contribute towards a large number of gifting-driven sales," says Deepak Agarwal, Co-founder, DesiClik.com.

Sourcing more than 10,000 products from 85 vendors, DesiClik.com focusses on Indian products not available on other global platforms, and at competitive prices. For the Indian market, DesiClik offers options to send gift items such as sweets, which otherwise is difficult. By shipping these from the US, the perishables are delivered in time.

According to a PayPal and Ipsos study based on a survey of 800 Indian online shoppers, Indian shoppers spent more than $8.7 billion on international e-commerce sites in 2016. Among international sites, US e-commerce sites received $3.9 billion in purchases, nearly half of the overseas sales from India in 2016.

Festivals have seen a sizeable contribution from India. "As we understand both American and Indian cultures as also the respective market landscapes, we are able to meet the specific demands of both. Also, the trust factor for the brand among the Indian Americans here has been passed on to their families back home, making it easier for us to penetrate the Indian market," points Agarwal.
